HISTORY AND PAST FESTIVALS

FOUNDING STORY

The Story Behind Raizado

Raizado Festival was born out of urgency and grief, and conceived by Justice for Migrant Women under the leadership of Mónica Ramírez as a cultural intervention to prevent further harm. In Fall 2020, a report revealed that more than 10,000 farmworkers in California died within just three months due to COVID-19, and excess mortality was highest in food/agriculture workers, a 39% increase.

This moment exposed profound systemic failure and underscored the need for urgent action to change the way that Latine people are viewed and treated so a tragedy like this does not occur again. Justice for Migrant Women recognized that addressing this harm required a bold cultural response, one capable of shifting narratives so communities would not be rendered invisible or left unprotected in times of crisis.

Changing the Narrative

It was also necessary to challenge that Latine people divert jobs, opportunities, and resources by affirming the truth: Latine communities enrich society by sustaining essential industries, creating jobs, generating cultural wealth, and contributing in countless ways to the social and economic fabric of the United States.

Responding with action

Serving as a powerful response to the need for cultural change, Raizado Festival was designed to be a “record-scratching moment.” To ensure its message was heard, the festival was intentionally established in a place of significance—one closely associated with influence, power, and visibility.

Five Years of Latine Excellence

Raizado Festival was born from a commitment to shift the national narrative by centering the truth, power, and culture of the Latine community in one of the most storied places in America. Five years later, the roots have never run deeper.

The Founding Moment

In the fall of 2020, reports revealed that in the first 8 months of COVID, deaths among farmworkers rose by 40% in California alone, the majority of them Latino/e, had died from COVID-19 in just the months following the global outbreak. For civil rights leader and social entrepreneur, Mónica Ramírez, it was a call to action that could not wait. Ramírez believed that for far too long farmworkers and other essential workers were considered “throw away people,” meaning that their lives were disregarded and they had not been provided the protections that were needed to safeguard their lives.

She founded Raizado Festival to create what she calls a "record-scratching moment,” that captured the public’s attention a bold, beautiful gathering in the heart of Aspen, Colorado that would demand the world see Latine people for who they truly are: innovators, changemakers, culture-makers, and the backbone of this nation. Raizado was originally incubated under Justice for Migrant Women and produced as part of The Latinx House, an initiative that was co-founded by Olga Segura, Alex Martínez Kondracke, and Mónica to celebrate Latinx creative excellence, build community, and advocate for increased representation and tangible career opportunities for Latinx voices in Hollywood and beyond.

Five Years Rooted

Raizado Festival returns to Aspen for its fifth year, this time heading fully downtown to the brand-new Paul JAS Center, celebrating everything that has been built and honoring the community at its heart. Given the many constraints and challenges to funding and to addressing emerging social challenges, we decided to shorten the festival and focus on the conversations and content we think are most pressing right now. The festival's pillars of programming — flash talks, screenings, panels, culinary experiences, and the ICON Awards Gala — will once again bring together the most inspiring voices in the Latine community, in the place where it all began.
